Sony says, 'stay home,' confirms all PS5 launch day sales online-only

TL;DR
  • Sony PlayStation 5 launch day sales will be online-only, Sony confirms.
  • It is unclear how long PS5 sales will be online-only, but you don’t need to line up at a physical retailer on Day 1.
  • The PS5 will hit a general sale on November 12 or November 19, depending on the region.

Today, in a blog post, Sony confirmed what most had been suspecting: PS5 sales will be online-only at launch. That means on November 12 (for the US, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea) or November 19 (everywhere else), you won’t find any PS5 units at physical retailers.

Sony PlayStation 5 launch day sales

To be clear, this news does not affect those who pre-ordered a PS5 and scheduled to pick it up from a physical retailer. This news only applies to folks who do not have a secured pre-order and are looking to buy a console outright on launch day.

If you are looking to buy a new console on the PlayStation 5 launch day, limited quantities will be available from select retailers. Here in the United States, the following retailers have confirmed they will sell the PS5 online on November 12:

There will likely be other retailers selling the latest console, too. You’ll need to do some digging for your area.

However, do keep in mind that pre-orders for the PS5 sold out in minutes. It is highly likely that it will be incredibly difficult to nab a new console on the PlayStation 5 launch day.

Sony was not clear on how long these online-only sales will last. We would guess that it will be at least a week after the launch before you can even attempt to buy one from a physical retailer. It’s much more likely that you won’t be able to get one physically until December.
