Ever wanted to take 3D scans of yourself and print them out? No? Well, now you can anyway.

Back at MWC, Sony showed off a major update to its 3D Creator app, allowing users to capture 3D selfies which could be shared to Facebook or even 3D printed. It’s taken a while, but the app update is finally available.

The new 3D Creator update brings the aforementioned 3D selfie functionality, as well as better detail thanks to cloud processing.

“3D Creator will now also be able to capture even more detail and definition, with post-scan cloud processing rendering your 3D scans in 4K textures — offering even greater realism, so that fruit you painstakingly mapped will look good enough to eat,” the Japanese brand explained on its blog.

As for compatible phones, you’ll need a Sony Xperia XZ Premium, XZ1 or XZ1 Compact to take advantage of the new function.

The app made its debut on the Xperia XZ1 and XZ1 Compact late last year, allowing you to 3D scan various objects and subjects. These scans can then be 3D-printed, viewed in augmented reality, or used as a live wallpaper.

It’s not the first time we’ve seen 3D scanning apps, owing to the likes of Qlone and the now-shuttered Seene. But a solution from a major mobile manufacturer is welcomed anyway.
