TL;DR
  • Samsung’s Gear VR range could be rebranded to Galaxy VR.
  • Rumor comes weeks after Samsung-owned trademarks emerged for Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Fit.
  • Could we see a Galaxy VR device launch alongside the Note 9 or Galaxy S10?

Further evidence has emerged that Samsung could be abandoning the Gear moniker and pushing its mobile products under one single brand: Galaxy.

It’s been less than a month since trademarks for Samsung Galaxy Watch and Samsung Galaxy Fit surfaced and now, according to SamMobile sources, the South Korean firm is preparing to rebrand its Gear VR products to Galaxy VR.

Samsung has released smartwatches, fitness bands, earphones, and virtual reality headsets, under the Gear banner for the better part of half of a decade. While it’s a nice catch-all brand for all of Samsung’s wearables, it’d make sense to pool them all together alongside its hugely popular Galaxy smartphones.

The Gear VR range specifically has gone through various iterations to adapt its virtual reality hardware to the latest Galaxy smartphones. The most recent variant, which launched in 2017, is compatible with Samsung’s 2017 and 2018 flagships, including the Note 8, Galaxy S9, and Galaxy S9 Plus.

While a Galaxy VR headset could arrive alongside the Note 9 or Galaxy S10 in the near future, it’s worth taking the news with a pinch of salt until Samsung confirms the rebrand. This is especially true for the Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Fit rumors, as Samsung would no doubt want to hold those two trademarks even if it wasn’t planning to actually use them.
