That Note 20 Ultra leak is probably not real, so don't get your hopes up

You know the leak by now, most likely. We don't buy it for a second.

The upcoming Galaxy Note 20 line is going to be one of the most exciting smartphone launches of the year. We are expecting a Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra to be a part of the lineup (although it could be a Note 20 Plus instead), and the idea of an uber-premium Note device has us in a tizzy.

However, it’s important that we don’t let our excitement cloud our judgment. Just because we are totally ready to feast our eyes on a new Note doesn’t mean we should throw reason out the window. With that in mind, we hope you’ll view a recent “leak” of Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra information as extremely suspect.

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra images are suspect

If you don’t know which leak we’re referring to here, it stems from anonymous leaker Ice Universe. On Twitter, Ice posted a series of images and a listing of specs that allegedly represent the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.

Check out the tweet and images below:

Now, Ice Universe is a prominent leaker. They have definitely leaked accurate information in the past, and their large Twitter following is all the info you need to assess their popularity. However, this information doesn’t hold water for us for multiple reasons.

First off, those images are almost certainly just a Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus. Notice how they all conveniently leave out identifying factors such as the home screen, settings pages, colorway, etc.? The images are all very high-quality and Ice was clearly in no rush to take them, so surely they would have had time to take some images that really prove this is a Note 20 Ultra.

We’re not saying Ice is purposely hiding those features so we can’t tell these are fakes, but we are saying that if this really is a Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, it’s awfully strange that Ice isn’t including photographic proof of that.

We should also point out that Ice never actually claims these images are of the Note 20 Ultra. Obviously, anyone reading the tweet would reasonably assume that they are Note 20 Ultra images, but Ice may have not intended that to be the case. If that were true, though, wouldn’t that make the specs list even more suspect?

We’re not buying the specs, either

Some specs of the supposed Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra can be inferred. It almost certainly won’t come with less storage or RAM as the Galaxy Note 10 Plus, for example, and it also won’t have weaker cameras. It’s also almost certain that it will come with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865.

However, Ice Universe claims it will come with the Snapdragon 865 Plus, a chipset that hasn’t been announced. Now, Android Authority has information that leads us to believe there won’t be a Snapdragon 865 Plus chipset, so that makes us skeptical of this claim.

Some of the other specs listed by Ice are either suspect or obvious, too. We haven’t heard any rumors at all that there will be a new S Pen on the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, for example. Now, it’s possible (even likely) that the S Pen will get some upgrades this year as compared to last year, but it’s very unlikely it will get a design or feature overhaul.

The point is that there’s a lot here that doesn’t hold water, and we’re not buying it. We will gladly hang our heads in shame if these “leaks” turn out to be true, but we are pretty confident that’s not going to happen.
