TL;DR
  • Reddit has announced that it is beginning to test placing ads in search result pages.
  • The ads that appear will be based on a range of factors, including contextual relevance to a query.
  • The test is being run with a select group of advertisers.

Reddit recently announced controversial plans to shift primarily to a logged-in experience, which could change how people browse the website. On the heels of that divisive decision, Reddit has made another announcement that’s sure to rile up its users. You may soon start seeing more ads on the platform.

In a blog post, the company revealed that it is beginning a new test. This test will see the insertion of ads on search result pages. Reddit says that it believes this area of the site has high purchase and search intent.

The ads you see in search will be based on a range of factors, according to Reddit. One of those factors will be contextual relevance to your query. For example, if you search for “espresso machine,” you may be shown ads for espresso machines, coffee beans, mugs, or other coffee-related items.

Initially, the test will be run with a “select group of eligible advertisers.” Reddit says that it will review how its users react to the ads. It will use that feedback to make adjustments over time, refining the experience and the allowed advertisers.
