TL;DR
  • The Red Hydrogen One user manual has appeared on the FCC website.
  • The manual reveals the camera UI as well as several camera-related features.
  • Red’s smartphone is expected to ship to pre-order customers next month.

The Red Hydrogen One smartphone has been shrouded in secrecy ahead of its launch. From the 4V display to several core specifications, we still don’t know much about the device. Now, the Hydrogen One instruction manual has surfaced on the FCC website, giving us a look at several features.

Aside from the basic (and unsurprising) telephony and messaging functions, we also have a look at the camera app and associated features. The user manual shows a screenshot of the camera app, containing expected features (e.g. HDR, panorama, flash, timer) and a few extra icons.

One of these is a 2D/3D toggle, allowing you to switch between traditional 2D snaps and 3D shots. The other unique icon is the flash/exposure mode (the last icon on the right), which lets you toggle between Program (automatic) mode and manual mode.

Keep the phone in Program mode and the Hydrogen One will take a photo with “the appropriate level of exposure, light, and shade,” according to an excerpt of the user manual. Switch to manual mode, and you’ll be able to control the shutter speed and ISO. White balance adjustments apparently need to be made from the settings menu of the phone’s camera app.

What else should you know?

Delve a little deeper and you’ll find the ability to change your photo/video resolution, shoot a black-and-white snap, create a timelapse, and view a histogram of the current scene. The app also lets you tweak the camera’s default color tones, letting you save desired tones for future use.

Other than the camera app, we also get a look at the homescreen, which seems pretty stock for the most part (aside from the custom icons). This bodes well for fans of lightweight Android skins (or stock Android).

The Red Hydrogen One will feature a mysterious 4V display (early previews suggest it’s an advanced form of 3D), last-generation Snapdragon 835 chipset, a 4,500mAh battery, microSD card support, and a headphone jack. The phone is expected to launch via AT&T, Verizon, and Mexico’s Telcel on November 2, but pre-order customers will get the device from October 9.
