TL;DR
  • Nothing has started rolling out the stable Nothing OS 5.0 update to the Phone 3, making it the company’s first phone to receive Android 17.
  • The update adds a redesigned Launcher, split Quick Settings and notifications, new widgets, camera upgrades, deeper customization, and several Android 17 features.
  • The rollout is staggered, so availability will vary by region and device.

Nothing laid out a pretty clear Android 17 roadmap when it unveiled Nothing OS 5.0 in August. The Phone 3 would lead the charge with an Open Beta, while the stable release was penciled in for mid-October. Right on cue, the company is now making good on that promise, with the Phone 3 becoming the first Nothing handset to receive the stable Nothing OS 5.0 update.

Nothing says the general release is now rolling out to Phone 3 users, although it is being distributed in stages, so availability will vary by region and device. You can check manually by heading to Settings > System > System update. The update weighs 2.84GB for non-beta users, while beta users see a roughly 1.68GB download, according to rollout screenshots circulating on social media.

This is also the full Nothing OS 5.0 package, rather than another beta build. The update introduces Nothing’s redesigned Launcher, the new Geist typeface, a refreshed Settings interface, smoother animations, two additional lock-screen clocks, deeper personalization, and a translucent theme with frosted-glass styling.

It also includes plenty of functional changes. Quick Settings and notifications can now be split into separate panels, Bluetooth devices can be connected or disconnected with a single tap, and home-screen icons can be rearranged in bulk. Nothing has also added Collector and Away Time widgets, Glyph Timer support, faster Essential Voice transcriptions, and a dedicated Glyph app.

The camera also gets a sizeable tune-up, including adjustable Tuning effects, improved Presets, Dual-view Video, H.265 recording, video filters, better zoom and close-up shooting, and a refreshed interface.

Android 17 includes some of the underlying plumbing, including Expanded Dark Theme, Noto 3D Emoji, improved privacy indicators, enhanced HDR brightness controls, and updated Live Updates.

The rollout will continue gradually, with other eligible devices following the previously announced roadmap.
