TL;DR
  • The new Netflix Basic with ads plan does not work on all devices.
  • You may want to check supported devices before you switch to the cheaper plan.

Netflix’s new Basic plan with ads is now live in 12 countries. It gives users an option to pay less for Netflix streaming ($6.99/month in the US) if they are willing to watch commercials that run before and during TV shows and movies. However, if you are thinking of switching from your regular Netflix plan to the new ad-supported tier, or if you’re simply subscribing for the first time, you should know that the plan doesn’t work on all devices.

For instance, if you have the first, second, or third-gen Chromecast, you will not be able to watch Netflix with the Basic plan. The cheaper tier is only supported in Chromecast with Google TV models.

As far as mobile devices are concerned, you’ll need to update your Android and iOS devices to at least Android 7 and iOS 15 or later.

Meanwhile, the new ad plan works just fine on all Amazon Fire TV devices.

If you have an Apple TV, you are completely out of luck. You cannot watch the Basic with ads Netflix plan on any of Apple’s streaming boxes.

Similarly, if you use a PlayStation 3 for binging Netflix, you won’t be able to continue if you switch to the new plan. The plan works as intended on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
