Micromax-YU-invite

Last month, Indian consumer electronics company Micromax and Cyanogen Inc. announced a partnership to launch a new smartphone named the YU. Micromax has now begun sending out invites for the YU’s launch event, which will take place on December 18th.

Unfortunately, the invite gives nothing away in terms of hardware, although it does contains some bizarre shaped lettering and the words “block your date” and “play god”. It looks like shape or form could have some importance at the launch event.

We also believe that the MicroMax YU will be a high-end device of some sorts. Micromax co-founder Rahul Sharma says that “the phone is going to be a monster”, as it will have “really cool specs”. Last month however, it was said that the smartphone would cost less than the OnePlus One and that software would be able to make “an inexpensive device seem like a much more premium-level device”. We can probably expect a low-cost, mid to high-end specced smartphone along the lines of OnePlus and Xiaomi.

There are, of course, some strings attached to this deal, which appear to have resulted in a little trouble for those looking to purchase an OnePlus One from within the country. Micromax appears to have secured an exclusive deal to receive OTA updates for Cyanogen OS in the country, which means that OnePlus One regional devices sold directly in India won’t receive future OTA updates.

Micromax has apparently been in talks with numerous Indian e-commerce websites to help distribute the handset. We anticipate that these details will also be revealed at this month’s launch event. Be sure to pencil December 18th into your diaries.
