TL;DR
  • The Meizu head of global marketing confirms on Twitter that a Meizu Android Go phone will come out soon.
  • The phone will likely be released this year, although not in America.
  • Meizu is likely focusing on expanding its reach in India with this yet-to-be-named device.

Meizu doesn’t have much of a presence outside of Asia and some parts of Europe, but it is still the eleventh-largest smartphone manufacturer in the world. According to Ard Boudeling, the head of global marketing at Meizu, the company is working with Google to release an Android Go phone.

Boudeling posted the tweet below to announce the development of the as-yet-unnamed device:

Those of you who’ve been following me for a while know how passionate I am about Android Go.

However, it did also say that it has no plans to enter America in the near future. It cited the problems fellow smartphone manufacturers Huawei and ZTE have faced with developing an American presence under President Trump as the primary factor in its decision. As such, it is highly unlikely this Meizu Android Go device will ever see an American release.

Android Go is the lightweight version of Android designed for devices with low specs and low pricing to match. Google hopes that Android Go will help bring smartphones to areas of the world where affording a phone is currently out-of-reach for most citizens.

Meizu is doing well in China but reportedly struggling to find a base in India. This Android Go phone is likely an attempt to build up customers in that region, where low-priced phones do very well.

We recently wrote about a set of Meizu Bluetooth earbuds that light up. Those are also only going to be available in China for the foreseeable future.
