TL;DR
  • LG could announce the LG G7 and LG G7 Plus in May, according to recent speculation.
  • The G7 is tipped to cost about $100 more than its predecessor, and house similar specs to the LG G7 (neo) spotted at MWC.
  • The speculation conflicts with previous rumors on several counts and shouldn’t be treated as verbatim.

LG may be gearing up to launch its latest flagships, possibly named the LG G7 and LG G7 Plus, in May. The news arrived from ETnews [Translated] earlier today, where it is also suggested that the G7 will cost 100,000 won (~$94) more than its predecessor.

ETnews doesn’t mention a source, but the website discussed several other potential details about the G7. It’s said to include an iPhone X-like notch on the OLED display, and AI camera features like seen on the LG V30S ThinQ (though they’re said to be even better on the G7).

Additionally, the G7 is believed to feature a vertically mounted 16 MP (+ 16 MP?) dual-lens rear camera, and a Quad-DAC audio system. The handset is also said to be packing a 3,000 mAh battery, while previous rumors suggested the handset would include a Snapdragon 845 chipset and at least 4 GB of RAM.

Interestingly, these are the same specs from the LG G7 (neo), a reportedly scrapped handset spotted at MWC. This isn’t the only piece of curious information from the report, however.

ETnews indicates that LG will keep its G and V series of flagships at least until next year—though they were previously expected to be abandoned. Meanwhile, the LG V40 may see its release timeframe pushed back like the G7’s, and appear in November rather than the traditional September launch window. This would potentially see it face more competition from the anticipated HUAWEI Mate 10 successor than the Samsung Galaxy Note 9.

The LG G6 cost 899,800 won (~$845) when it launched in South Korea, so a higher price tag could be a risky move for a device that didn’t sell especially well in the West.

Details regarding the G7 Plus, on the other hand, are thin, though it’s speculated to cost 1,000,000 won (~$940). It’s the first we’ve heard about this variant, and as with all of the speculation above, the news should be taken with a grain of salt.

At this juncture, we don’t quite know what LG is planning. Its next flagship is said to be going back to basics, and to be more expensive than previous devices. To be rebranded, and to be called the LG G7. Until we get some hard confirmations, it’s all up in the air, but if you want to try and make sense of the previous LG G7 speculation yourself, you can find it at the link.
