Honor is the next brand to offer a longer software update policy
- Honor has announced a new software update policy at MWC 2023.
- The new update policy delivers three major OS upgrades and five years of security patches.
- Honor’s policy only applies to the Magic 5 Pro and Magic Vs for now.
System update policies are a growing battleground in the smartphone space, but Honor has generally lagged behind the pack. Now, it turns out that the company is stepping up its game in this regard.
Honor confirmed in an email that its newly revealed Honor Magic Vs foldable and Honor Magic 5 Pro will receive three major OS updates and five years of security patches.
This puts Honor on par with Google’s Pixel series, but the firm is still behind Samsung, Oppo, and OnePlus. These brands offer four major OS upgrades and five years of security updates for select phones. Samsung is the undisputed king of software updates, though.
That said, this is still a significant improvement over Honor’s previous bottom-of-the-barrel update policy, which only pledged two major OS upgrades and two years of security patches.
In saying so, we would’ve liked to see the company’s standard Magic 5 receive the same update pledge, particularly in light of its €899 (~$952) price tag. It’s also disappointing that the revised update policy doesn’t apply to last year’s flagship handsets, although this is in line with OnePlus and Oppo’s similarly restrictive pledges.
