This Android brand just launched its own e-reader that lives on the back of your phone

ePaper displays and smartphones have crossed paths plenty of times before. The YotaPhone famously put an ePaper screen right on the back of a handset, while HUAWEI once offered an optional ePaper rear cover for the P8. More recently, gadgets like the magnetic Flowtica Verso have turned the back of your phone into useful accessory space. HONOR is now giving that old idea a bookish twist with the HONOR Life S3, a tiny, standalone e-reader designed to hitch a ride on your phone.
According to a JD.com listing (spotted via Michael Yang Eink Lab), the HONOR Life S3 has a 3.68-inch ePaper touchscreen with a 259ppi pixel density, packed into a 5.6mm-thick body weighing 61g. It has no front light, though, so you’ll need ambient light for nighttime reading.
HONOR includes a magnetic ring in the box, so the S3 isn’t limited to phones with built-in magnets. You can transfer books over Wi-Fi 6 through HONOR Smart Space, and supported formats include EPUB, MOBI, TXT, PDF, DOC, and DOCX. Built-in storage is just 16MB, but it supports microSD cards of up to 1TB.
A 650mAh battery powers the reader, with HONOR claiming up to 30 hours of continuous reading. It runs an RTOS rather than Android and comes with JD Reading preinstalled.
There’s an interesting story behind the hardware, too. The Chinese publication reports that HONOR never mentioned the Life S3 during its September 28 launch event. Instead, it quietly appeared on JD.com. The publication also says Moaan manufactures the device for the HONOR Life product line.
While HONOR isn’t the first major phone maker to dabble in ePaper accessories, what’s different here is the execution. Unlike HUAWEI’s phone-specific cover or the ePaper displays built into devices such as the YotaPhone, the HONOR Life S3 is an independent pocket reader that can magnetically piggyback on practically any phone.
Pricing starts at CNY 359 (~$54) in China, while a version bundled with a TF card costs CNY 399 (~$60). There’s no word yet on a wider release.
