slither.io and agar.io are massively multiplayer games in which players take control of a single entity (a cell in agar.io and a worm in slither.io) and must consume food to grow in size and score points. Surrounding players are competing to do the same with the aim of topping the leaderboard – and maintaining their place there.
The success of these games has no doubt been helped by the number of let’s play videos covering them on YouTube and the fact that they’re available for free on iOS, Android and browsers.
Google’s use of ‘trending’ means topics that maintained the highest number of searches over the longest period of time in 2016 when compared to the popularity of those topics in 2015.
Other titles on the list include Overwatch, Warcraft and Call of Duty, which arrive from the joint forces of Activision Blizzard, and Madden 17 and Battlefield 1 from publishing giant EA (Electronic Arts). Open world survival title No Man’s Sky, from British indie studio Hello Games, also made the list at number nine.
