Android Auto is finally letting you ditch that boring blue arrow straight from your dashboard

Google is finally rolling out one of the small but useful Google Maps changes we first spotted earlier this year.

Until now, Android Auto users could see their custom vehicle avatar in Google Maps, but changing it meant pulling out their phone and opening Maps. The new option removes that extra step.

You can now open Google Maps on Android Auto and head into the navigation settings to bring up a new “Driving avatar” option. From there, you can pick from the available vehicle designs and change their color, just as you can in the Google Maps app on your phone.

We first spotted this feature back in February, when Google was still preparing the option for release. It now appears to be rolling out more widely, although we haven’t been able to determine exactly when the rollout started or whether it’s available to everyone yet.

We found the option on two separate devices running Android Auto 17.8.163744-release.daily alongside Google Maps 26.38.01.980791571, suggesting this isn’t limited to a single device or account.
