Learning some manners.

TL;DR
  • Google’s first October update for Google Home brings improvements to Gemini for Home, including more natural conversations, better voice command handling, and consistent weather responses.
  • The Google Home app is getting redesigned controls for lights, plugs, and switches, alongside several camera fixes and usability improvements.
  • Compatible Matter devices, including Philips Hue lights, should now respond faster and more reliably thanks to improved local control through Google Home hubs.

To round off the month of September, Google rolled out a feature-packed update for Google Home and its Gemini integration, improving the AI assistant’s ability to hear you in noisy rooms, making it respond faster, improving multilingual conversation reliability, and more. The tech giant is following that up with the first Google Home update for October, delivering more natural ways to end conversations, easier-to-read answers on smart displays, redesigned lights, plugs, and switch controls, and more.

My Google Home app doesn’t look very different just yet, but thanks to Google’s in-depth release notes, we know about everything that’s coming.

For starters, when you end back-and-forth Gemini for Home conversations on a polite or neutral note, by saying “Thank you,” for example, Gemini will now respond with a brief, friendly goodbye. On the other hand, if you tell the assistant to stop talking, it will do just that without a closing statement. The update also fixes an issue where saying “stop” used to be misinterpreted as ending a conversation rather than stopping an active alarm, timer, or media playback.

Temperature units are also now expected to maintain consistency across your home, with Gemini’s weather-based answers respecting your temperature unit preference (Fahrenheit or Celsius). Another improvement concerns how Gemini for Home handles your relaxing music and ambient sounds. When you ask for “relaxing music”, “spa music”, or “meditation music,” Gemini for Home will play music from your media provider instead of playing native ambient background sounds like white noise or rain.

Users who’ve been experiencing a wonky drag-and-drop experience in the app’s Favorites view should now have an easier time rearranging devices. Meanwhile, after a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm clears, the app will display a banner highlighting the event and when it ended.

The update introduces a host of camera fixes too. iOS users should now see a faster recovery when their camera’s live view gets stuck, while Android users should experience more responsive progress bar scrubbing when paused. Additionally, if you’re taking a still-image snapshot from your event history, you’ll no longer see a playback error.

Elsewhere, the update also adds redesigned controls for third-party lights, plugs, and switches, though considering we don’t have the update yet, we’re not entirely sure what the redesign looks like for now. According to Google, it should offer a more “tactile and responsive” feel. Plus, on the full-screen controller page for devices, you should now be able to swipe up from the bottom of the screen to quickly access additional device actions and settings.

Finally, Philips Hue users should now benefit from an upgrade that enables local Matter control through Google Home hubs for those with existing Philips Hue bridges. Other Matter devices with a compatible Matter hub should now also feel more responsive, which Google compares to “the feel of flipping a physical switch.”
