Google is now emailing Gemini subscribers about a change that will cost them 4x more
Oct 15, 2026 — 12:59 AM ET

- Google is now emailing AI Plus subscribers to confirm that access to Pro models in the Gemini app and AI Mode in Search will be restricted to Google AI Pro subscribers and above from November 13, 2026.
- AI Plus subscribers will retain access to Google’s Flash and Flash Lite models, but existing chats using Pro models will need to continue with a different model.
- The email follows Google’s earlier announcement of restrictions on lower-priced subscription tiers.
Google has reportedly started notifying Google AI Plus subscribers that they’ll lose the ability to select Pro models in the Gemini app and AI Mode in Search from November 13, 2026.
The change means subscribers who want continued access to Google’s more capable models will need to upgrade to the $19.99/month Google AI Pro plan or the $99.99/month AI Ultra plan.
A Reddit user has shared an email from Google saying that AI Plus subscribers will continue to have access to Google’s latest Flash and Flash Lite models. The company says these are being built for speed and intelligence. Users will also be able to continue previous conversations that used a Pro model, but they will have to switch to a different model.
Earlier in October, Google updated its Gemini support documentation to outline changes to model availability across subscription tiers. Those changes were initially expected to take effect on October 9.
Under the restrictions, free users would lose access to newer Flash models, while AI Plus subscribers would no longer be able to use Pro models and newer reasoning models. Both tiers would instead be limited to Flash and Flash Lite models, while Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers would retain access to the more advanced options.
The newly shared email now specifically mentions November 13 as the date when Pro model selection will become exclusive to AI Pro and higher tiers. That’s later than the October 9 date previously reported, though the email alone doesn’t explain the change in timing.
The restrictions also come as Google is expanding its model lineup. The company recently announced the rollout of Gemini 4 Argon to AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, bringing improvements to reasoning, writing quality, and response accuracy. Google has also introduced new task management capabilities and integrations with more than 40 apps.
