It’s always sad to see the end of a social network. All those countless hours spent pouring creativity, love and attention into a creator’s posts, gone in an instant. When Twitter announced it would be killing off Vine in no short order, a lot of folks were left wondering what would happen to all those six-second Vines? Would the endless loop finally come to an end?

While Twitter stated it wouldn’t kill off the vine.co website that continues to hosts Vines, that always felt more like a Vine graveyard than a living, breathing environment for Vine stars like Damn Daniel, Jérôme Jarre and KingBach. This is where Giphy decided to step in with a lifeline, offering an upload tool to transform Vines into GIFs.

It actually makes a lot of sense: I mean, where better to give Vines a second chance at popularity than the endless loops of Giphy? What’s even better is that Giphy won’t just convert the Vines to lossy GIF format but will also store the original video files as well. The tool isn’t available yet, but Giphy promises it’s coming soon.

When did you give up on Vine? Are GIFs better than video loops?
