Upcoming Fitbit Watch leaks again, looks a bit like the aging Fitbit Blaze

It seems we now have more renders of the Fitbit Watch, revealing a device that somewhat resembles the older Fitbit Blaze.

So what happens when you combine the talents from Vector, Pebble, and Fitbit in an attempt to reinvent the fitness smartwatch as we know it? You apparently get a slightly modified version of the now aged (and not particularly successful) Fitbit Blaze. Back in May we first got a look at a render that purportedly showed off the upcoming Fitbit Watch. At the time we admitted that Fitbit’s alleged creation wasn’t the sexiest looking device, but according to Warable it’s likely the one we are stuck with.

A new set of leaked renders show off a device that pretty much mirrors the older May render, and according to Warable the new images represent the device’s final look. The Fitbit Watch is said to be offered in three color variants: silver case with navy strap, rose gold case with blue strap, and a darker case with a black strap. While we aren’t necessarily impressed with the design, it’s important to remember that what is underneath the watch matters just as much as the aesthetics.

Fitbit has traditionally used green optical sensors for tracking heart rate, but the new renders show off two red lights instead. This could hint at a pulse oximeter, which actually measures oxygen levels in the blood, similar to the methods used in a hospital. If this assumption proves correct, that could mean much more accurate heart rate readings than most of Fitbit’s competition. Of course, that’s just speculation at this point.

Still, if Fitbit really wants to be a success it would make sense that they would want to do so by significantly raising the bar, especially in a world with so many solid options like the Garmin vivoActive series, Apple Watch, and others. What else do we know about the watch? Recently during an earnings call, Fitbit’s CEO said that there will be an “app gallery” that will launch alongside the watch with a limited selection of apps from partners. There will also be an SDK that will go public later so smaller app developers and companies can also get into the Fitbit app game.

We’re still not sure whether to be excited by Fitbit’s watch or not. For now, we’ll remain cautiously optimistic, perhaps the features here will make us forget the less-than-amazing design? Only time will tell.
