TL;DR
  • Doom for Android (and Doom II) just received a new update.
  • The update brings 120fps gameplay, a native 16:9 resolution, and mods via the DeHackEd system.
  • Each game is still just $4.99 for lifetime ad-free access.

Although it wasn’t the first of its kind, 1993’s first-person-shooter game Doom pretty much defined the genre. Recently, Bethesda brought us Doom for Android, as well as that game’s excellent sequel. Earlier this week, though, Bethesda issued a massive update to both titles.

Now, Doom and Doom II can play at up to 120 frames-per-second. You’ll obviously need a phone with at least a 120Hz refresh rate to experience that level of smoothness, but even phones with 90Hz refresh rates will now get smoother gameplay.

Additionally, Doom for Android now has a native 16:9 resolution, which will allow for more immersiveness. Combined with the FPS upgrade, Doom and Doom II will look better than ever. If you could travel back in time and tell a kid in 1993 you’d be playing Doom on your pocket computer at this quality, his mind would likely be blown out, just like that Cyberdemon you just ripped apart with a chainsaw.

Doom for Android: DeHackEd

Finally, both Doom and Doom II are now ready for mods. Using DeHackEd-based add-ons, you can modify the games in many different ways. For example, you can make the monsters (or your weapons) faster, which can either increase or decrease the game’s difficulty.

Both Doom and Doom II are pretty cheap: just $4.99 each on the Google Play Store. That gets you lifetime access to the full versions of the games with no ads or in-app purchases. If you already own either game, you should already have the latest updates with no extra charge.
