Back in the 1980’s, it was common sense that cars could actually morph into gigantic robots. Indeed the Transformers franchise is every bit as thriving today as it was when Hasbro created it, thanks in part to the recent movies. Coincidentally, Xiaomi – which is celebrating its 6th birthday on April 6th – has been transforming the way in which smartphone sales and devices are perceived and received. How positively pleasant, then, that the two have partnered for what might very well be the real “next big thing” in the far-flung future.

What you are looking at above is a “Transformers Special Edition” toy modeled after one of Xiaomi’s products. Given that we’re still trying to get smartphones to finally fold, it might be some time before a real piece of hardware can do this, but it’s still a damn cool action figure, no?

The toy converts from an unassuming looking MiPad to a bad-ass gold robot warrior. The project itself will be financed via crowdfunding, and will ship on May 13th to backers. The price? Just 169 Yuan which at today’s conversion rate, is just $26. While it goes without saying the product is not a real, functioning tablet, it would likely make a great addition to any fan’s desk.

This next one is arguably so cool it deserves its own solo-shot:

Now that the “internals” are out of the way, we have the final two images:

Wrap Up

While it’s unlikely this Transformer will ever make it out of China, it is undeniably cool nonetheless. It also makes you wonder if Hasbro has suddenly realized that it could begin to make an entire series of these kinds of products for a “Transformers: Smartphone Society” cartoon, or something like that. Just imagine what those iPhone versus Galaxy S smackdowns would look like!

What do you think of Xiaomi’s way of celebrating its birthday? Would you buy this toy? Has it made you hope for a real tablet than can do similar? What other gadget Transformers could you think of? Drop us a line in the comments section down below and share your thoughts!
