Gorilla Glass Victus 2 launched: Better protection against concrete drops
- Corning has announced Gorilla Glass Victus 2.
- The new glass boasts improved drop performance on concrete.
- Expect similar performance when it comes to scratch resistance and drops on asphalt.
Corning’s Gorilla Glass is the most popular protective solution for mid-range and high-end smartphones today, with Gorilla Glass Victus and Gorilla Glass Victus Plus being the two latest solutions.
Now, the company has announced Gorilla Glass Victus 2, so how does it differ from previous editions? Well, Corning said Victus 2 offers improved drop performance on concrete while still preserving Gorilla Glass Victus’ scratch resistance.
More specifically, the US firm said that Victus 2 was able to survive drops of up to one meter onto a surface “replicating concrete.” Corning said that rival solutions generally failed after drops of half a meter or less. The new glass is also able to survive drops of up to two meters onto surfaces resembling asphalt, which is in line with the original Victus claim.
What else should you know about Victus 2?
Corning vice-president David Velasquez claimed that today’s devices are 15% heavier and had screens that are 10% bigger than four years ago. Therefore, the new glass is also designed with heavier devices and larger screens in mind.
So when will we see the first phones with Gorilla Glass Victus 2? Corning says the solution is being evaluated by multiple brands right now but that it’ll reach the market in the next few months.
We’ve asked Corning how Gorilla Glass Victus compares to the new product in terms of concrete drops. We’ll update the article if/when the company gets back to us.
