Coolpad launches FamilyLabs platform, new app coming via Indiegogo

Coolpad is moving into family-focused technologies with its FamilyLabs platform — and a brand new app hitting Indiegogo today.

Coolpad has launched FamilyLabs, a new platform where it hopes to develop innovative new technologies centered around family. Coolpad announced the venture in a press release earlier today alongside its first products from the platform: the FamilyLabs app and a new smartphone, the Coolpad Legacy Plus.

We’d heard earlier this year that Coolpad was repositioning itself to be more family focused and FamilyLabs is clearly more about services than new phones. Coolpad said the Legacy Plus would be a premium device with a 6-inch display, but no further information was given in the press materials.

The FamilyLabs app will help parents communicate with other family members. They’ll be able to chat with multiple family members, locate them, and provide “remote support.” It’s coming to Android and iOS.

The FamilyLabs app will come pre-installed on the Coolpad Legacy Plus, and can be pre-ordered today from Indiegogo. Packages will start at $99 and will include between one and six months of free wireless Mint Mobile service with unlimited talk and text, and 8GB of 4G LTE data per month.

Coolpad also said those funding the product through Indiegogo would help “define critical app functionality and providing feedback to make the app valuable for families to use.”

It’s still too early to say how the broader FamilyLabs operations will pan out as details remain scarce right now. However, the FamilyLabs app itself may have a significant competitor in this sphere with the Google Family Link. They both sound like similar products, but Google has the upper hand with Family Link already being well-established and having tens of millions of downloads on Android.
