Clubhouse beta finally arrives on Android

It's a US-only release for now, but there are ways to try it out if you're in other countries.

TL;DR
  • Chatroom app Clubhouse has finally launched a beta version on Android.
  • The app still requires you to join a waitlist or receive an invite from a friend.
  • Availability is limited to the US for now.

Audio-only chatroom app Clubhouse was the talk of the tech town earlier this year, but the big downside was that it was limited to iOS only. We say “was” because the company has finally launched a beta version for Android.

“Today, we are thrilled to share that Clubhouse for Android will start rolling out in beta immediately,” the team noted in a blog post. But unfortunately the beta rollout is only available in the US for now.

“We will begin gradually, with the US today, followed by other English-speaking countries and then the rest of the world,” the Clubhouse team elaborated. The company suggests that it’ll be gathering feedback, issuing fixes, and work on a few new features “over the next few weeks” before a broader release. So that should give you a rough idea of when to expect Clubhouse in more countries.

Has Clubhouse arrived too late on Android?

It’s not quite a free-for-all in the US even, as you still need to sign up to a waitlist or receive an invite from a friend to use the service. But regardless of whether you’re in the US or downloading the app via APKMirror, you can register and reserve your username for now. And the Android app does indeed work outside the US if you receive an invite from an iOS-toting friend.

The Clubhouse developers report that several features are missing from the Android version though. These missing features include topic following, linking Instagram/Twitter accounts, club creation/management, updating name/username in-app, and more.

News of Android availability also comes as a ton of major services adopt or plan to implement similar audio-only services, such as Twitter, Telegram, and Facebook.
