TL;DR
  • Anbernic is in trouble for featuring an “unofficial piracy-focused” fork of the 3DS emulator Azahar in its promotional material for the RG DDS.
  • The Azahar team has announced it will no longer support devices made by Anbernic.
  • The team warns that it will not investigate or resolve issues or bugs related to devices from this manufacturer.

There’s a fair amount of excitement for the release of the Anbernic RG DDS. Putting a bit of a damper on the upcoming launch, a pricing leak suggests the Nintendo 3DS clone could cost more than expected. In another blow to whatever level of anticipation you may have, the team behind Azahar is pulling its support.

Anbernic has found itself in a bit of hot water after publishing its most recent promotional video for the handheld. In the video, the company features its own forked version of Azahar (a 3DS emulator), which it calls “Azahar Plus.” This video has not escaped the attention of the Azahar team.

In a social post, Azahar publicly calls out Anbernic for using an “unofficial piracy-focused” fork of the 3DS emulator. It goes on to state that the team has decided not to support the RG DDS or any other device made by Anbernic. Azahar warns that it will not investigate or resolve any issues or bugs related to this manufacturer going forward. The team recommends looking for alternatives if you want a device with guaranteed support.

It has come to our attention that handheld manufacturer Anbernic has been promoting their latest handheld device, the RG DDS, using unofficial piracy-focused forks of Azahar, and has been openly featuring these forks in their advertising material.

While it’s not necessarily illegal to create a fork of an open-source project, doing so without permission is not exactly the best look. And if that fork is buggy, it could have a negative impact on the reputation of the Azahar brand. Not to mention these emulators are under the ever-watchful eye of Nintendo.

As you can imagine, this decision by Azahar is not exactly great for the eventual launch of the RG DDS. The handheld is expected to start shipping on December 10, 2026. Leaks suggest that it could cost $300 to $365.
