What is AutoMath Photo Calculator?

AutoMath Photo Calculator is a mathematics application that allows you to take pictures of a problem. Once you’ve taken a picture, the app then solves the problem for you and provides you with steps on how to solve the problem. It’s currently free in the Google Play Store.

Here’s how AutoMath Photo Calculator works. It opens to a camera view that is highly cropped. You put the problem on camera and snap a picture. From there, the application attempts to solve the problem, give you the answer, and provide you with a list of steps on how to obtain the answer. There are a number of mathematical functions built in (250+) and includes some study guides like step-by-step tutorials. It also works entirely offline so you don’t need a network connection.

Unfortunately, the app has run into a lot of snags. People have complained about not being able to get it to work on their devices because their cameras cannot focus or get the whole problem in the cropped box. We didn’t have a problem getting simple stuff to work but the more complicated (and longer) math problems did present an issue. It’s also worth noting that this works best with typed problems. Taking pictures of hand-written problems requires above average penmanship so if you try this at home, make sure you write the problems as neatly as possible.

Overall, the app is almost useful. It’s a solid premise and would make as a great study tool although we all know that most kids would use an app like this to avoid doing the math themselves. If the developer can work out the kinks, there is a really useful app hidden in here. Unfortunately, there are still a lot of issues. Thankfully, it is totally free so if you want to try it for yourself, click the button below.
