TL;DR
  • Leaker Digital Chat Station says that adding a cooling fan to last year’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 gives better gaming/sustained performance than just the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 SoC.
  • Adding a cooling fan to the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 SoC gives significantly better performance.
  • Another Android brand is exploring adding a cooling fan to its Pro Max flagship, though it’s not immediately clear which brand this is.

Smartphone SoCs have grown more powerful every year, to the point where it’s practically necessary to equip any phone with a flagship SoC with vapor chamber cooling. Without vapor-chamber cooling, flagship SoCs will throttle quickly after their peak, yielding performance that looks good only on paper. It seems even vapor-chamber cooling might not be enough these days, as more OEMs are reportedly experimenting with adding active cooling fans to help the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 SoC sustain its performance for longer.

Leaker Digital Chat Station recently mentioned on Weibo that performance gains from a cooling fan outweigh those from a chip generation upgrade, especially in scenarios like gaming.

According to the leaker, a phone with a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and a cooling fan will deliver better gaming performance than a phone with just the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. Here, the context of “gaming” lends itself to sustained performance, and adding a fan is said to deliver results more impressive than upgrading to the latest, top-tier Snapdragon flagship SoC.

What would happen if you equipped the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 with a cooling fan? Digital Chat Station says the results would be significantly better than the current 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 solutions (with vapor chambers).

A machine translation of Digital Chat Station’s post indicates that a “parent brand” is also considering adding a fan to its flagship lineup, specifically on its Pro Max or Ultra variant. It’s not immediately clear which Android brand is being referred to here, but the implication here is that active cooling fans could emerge as a genuine direction for future phone upgrades rather than remaining confined to dedicated gaming phones like those from the REDMAGIC series.

The move highlights an ongoing industry dilemma: modern mobile processors can deliver extremely high benchmark scores, but aggressive thermal throttling often cuts short sustained performance during heavy gaming sessions. If mainstream OEMs adopt active cooling in their top-end flagships, power users might finally see sustained performance that does better justice to the processor’s peak capabilities.

It’s not a straightforward move, though, as adding an active cooling fan introduces new engineering hurdles related to dust resistance, waterproofing, and internal space constraints. However, given the direction chip prices are going, it would make sense for bigger brands to pour engineering effort into this route if they can feasibly use the same SoC and active cooling solution for a couple of years across multiple products. As long as I don’t lose water resistance, I’d be very interested to see what phone brands come up with that helps me get the most out of my new hardware.
