Android Auto bug is preventing calls from closed foldable phones

Part of the appeal of a clamshell foldable, like the Motorola Razr series, is being able to use it even when it’s in its smallest form. For example, you can run apps, check notifications, take selfies, and more. Normally, this also includes making calls while connected to Android Auto, but users have been experiencing issues recently.

Both Motorola and Google are investigating an issue with Android Auto. The issue in question concerns clamshell foldable owners who can’t make calls on their phones. Specifically, when the phone is closed, outgoing calls don’t work. However, incoming calls are unaffected by the device’s state.

According to user reports, calling works just fine when the phone is open. However, if you attempt to make an outgoing call while the phone is folded, Gemini will inform you that it is calling the contact, but the call is never initiated. The common theme among the reports is that calling wasn’t an issue until Gemini replaced Google Assistant.

It’s not just Motorola Razr owners who are having a difficult time with Android Auto. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip users are also experiencing the same problem. While the reports (1, 2, 3) span across months, there are claims as recent as this September.

Although both Motorola and Google have been looking into the problem, there doesn’t appear to be a resolution yet. Until a fix is rolled out, you’ll just have to leave your foldable open during your drive if you plan to make a call.
