TL;DR
  • Amazon India teases new Galaxy On device.
  • Teaser images hint at mobile payments, “superior performance”, and a “stunning new look”.
  • Some are speculating that the phone will be a variant of the Galaxy J7 Pro or Galaxy J7 Plus.

Samsung looks all set to expand its affordable Galaxy On range in India. Amazon India is hyping the release of a new On-series device with a series of teaser images that give us an idea of what to expect.

For those unfamiliar with the Galaxy On family, it’s essentially a rebrand of the J-series with minor tweaks to design and specification, and typically exclusive to Amazon. One notable exception to this was the Galaxy On Nxt which hit the market in April via FlipKart, but it seems like the upcoming phone will only be sold via Amazon.

The five teaser images currently live on Amazon’s Indian store suggest that the new device will offer some form of mobile payment service (likely Samsung Pay), “superior performance”, and a “stunning new look”. So which J-series phone is this?

The folks over at Sammobile think that we’re looking at a variant of the Galaxy J7 Pro, and I’m inclined to agree. While some have speculated that the mystery phone could be the Galaxy J7 Plus, Sammobile correctly points out that the J7 Pro is the only device that could plausibly fit the On-series price range that also supports Samsung Pay.

Unless Samsung adds support to refreshed Galaxy J7 Plus variant, then the J7 Pro seems to be the only viable candidate that can deliver a “new way to shop” as one teaser image promises.

As a quick refresher, the regular J7 Pro features a 5.5-inch Full HD display, a 13 MP camera on both the front and back, a fingerprint sensor, and Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box. It is powered by Samsung’s Exynos 7870 chipset, backed by 3 GB of RAM, 64 GB of onboard storage (expandable), and a 3,600 mAh battery.

We’ll have to wait and see whether the next On phone is based on the J7 Pro, or if Samsung has opted to make any significant changes to the spec and design.

Unfortunately, neither Amazon or Samsung have disclosed when we might see the new phone, or what its final name will be – the Galaxy On9, perhaps? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
