A look at the vivo Nex from the front, with it's unique all-screen design.
TL;DR
  • A Chinese “man on the street” video shows the vivo Nex in full, complete with pop-up selfie cam.
  • In the video, contestants marvel at the selfie camera as it slides out from the top of the phone.
  • You can also see the dual camera setup, the headphone jack, and the underglass fingerprint reader.

The vivo Nex was shown off to the world at Mobile World Congress 2018, under the prototype name vivo Apex. After causing a sensation at the convention, vivo promised that the phone would release to the public at some point in 2018.

vivo eventually announced that the Nex would launch on June 12 in Shanghai, but we found a video that shows the phone in full right now, complete with its pop-up selfie cam.

Some of the video is in Chinese, but there are English subtitles. Here’s a YouTube mirror of the clip:

The vivo Nex looks like we expected it to look, although there is a bit more of a chin than we hoped. Regardless, this phone is one of the very first truly all-screen devices, foregoing the current trend of notching the display to house the front-facing sensors.

The pop-up selfie cam gets a good amount of screen time in the video, with many of the contestants marveling at it gently sliding out of the top of the device. There’s a rumor that vivo will also release a version of the Nex without the pop-up camera, instead moving it to the chin.

There’s also no fingerprint sensor on the back of the device because it’s been moved to underneath the display. The video doesn’t show the fingerprint sensor in action, but towards the end when Mr. Unicorn Man (aka FootFoot) is yelling about the phone, you can see the fingerprint sensor icon:

You can also clearly see in the video that the phone has a headphone jack, making the vivo Nex quite possibly the perfect smartphone.

We still have no word on price and no idea when the device will actually be available for purchase. But with the launch only a week away, we won’t have to wait long for that info.
