As inconvenient as it is, it’s quite the norm for customers to get unwanted surprises (read: software glitches or hardware defects) upon purchasing an Android device — or any other electronic devices for that matter. But how would you feel about buying a phone that comes with a built-in “backdoor” feature that allows others to manipulate the phone from afar for potentially unlawful purposes? That’s what ZTE has apparently admitted to have found in one of its Android phones in the US. The Chinese phone maker has confirmed that the ZTE Score, which is sold through various carriers in the …
A few months ago, the American mobile phone service provider MetroPCS launched, together with ZTE – the Chinese handset manufacturer – an affordable, entry level Android phone called the ZTE Score M. This Android 2.3.4 (Gingerbread) comes with a variety of features like a 3.5-inch HVGA touchscreen, a 600MHz CPU, a 3.2-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, 4GB of internal memory, a microSD slot. Oh yeah, and a root backdoor! Thanks to an anonymous post to Pastebin, details have now emerged that the device has a setuid-root binary (a program that runs with root privileges) in /system/bin/sync_agent that serves no function other than …
While the likes of Samsung and HTC are duking it out at the top, Huawei and ZTE are two manufacturers that customers can rely on for some affordable low-to mid-end Android phones and tablets. Over the last couple of months, however, we’ve seen Huawei trying to leverage its position in the market by making its phones thinner and more powerful. Where does this leave ZTE? The world’s number four handset manufacturer, ZTE has actually sold more mobile phones than Huawei. In 2011, ZTE sold 15 million smartphones, but that’s still peanuts compared to the worldwide total of 472 million units. …
Huawei and ZTE, two very popular manufacturers in their own Chinese market, have been relative unknown in the world smartphone arena, until the beginning of this year. After some impressive demonstrations at this year’s Mobile World Congress, both companies are hoping to back up the “talk” with equally impressive sales figures. More precisely, Huawei and ZTE plan to ship a combined 100 million smartphones this year. This is a huge jump in their shipping targets from 2011, with a shift from 16 million to 60 million for Huawei, and from 11 million to 40 million for ZTE. In the process, …
Announced back in January at CES 2012 Las Vegas, the Medfield chip represents Intel’s latest attempt to enter the smartphone processor market, one currently dominated by Qualcomm and Nvidia (both using ARM architectures for their designs). Although Intel has high hopes that, starting with the second quarter of this year, major manufacturers will choose to implement the Medfield chip in their upcoming flagship superphones, a recent report from Digitimes claims that the Intel Atom Z2460 CPU will be more popular in the entry-level market instead, one significantly less profitable than the high-end sector. We’ve previously reported about the Medfield chip …
The Chinese at ZTE, like their conationals at Huawei, have a lot to prove this year at MWC. Both Chinese manufacturing giants have huge global businesses (ZTE is number four cell phone maker in the world), but little influence in the immensely lucrative Western smartphone markets. However, that may change in the close future, and Samsung and HTC should really be worried. ZTE previously announced the beautiful Mimosa X, a dual-core Android 4.0 device with a lightweight profile and an equally light footprint on your budget. With all its qualities, the ZTE Mimosa X isn’t the kind of phone that …
Less than a day after announcing two new ICS-running smartphones, ZTE ups the ante with the Mimosa X, a 4.3” device running on Nvidia’s Tegra 2 System-on-a-Chip . We have already seen many devices built around Nvidia’s dual-core architecture, but the Mimosa X is special in two significant ways. First, it holds the honor of being the first smartphone completely built on Nvidia silicon, sporting the Icera radio technology, which the Santa Clara-based giant acquired last year. Second, it’s the first phone that runs on Tegra 2 to target the mid-market, or, as Nvidia calls it, the mainstream buyer. ZTE …
Everybody’s pretty excited to see what smartphone and tablet manufacturers will be announcing at the upcoming Mobile World Congress scheduled for this weekend. This is why they have been looking out for information on what new devices can be expected from their favorite device manufacturers. Over here at Android Authority, we also can’t hold our excitement. That is why we have kept our readers up to date with the latest news. Although we’ve been talking mostly about the Samsung Galaxy S3 and rumored quad-core Huawei smartphones, we have to play fair and give news on the other manufacturers that are …
In lieu of the patent infringement lawsuits filed by Apple, a strong number of Chinese handset manufacturers have formed an alliance to counter the attack. This group includes key players in Chinese handset vendors such as Lenovo, ZTE, Coolpad, TCL and Konka. Apart from Apple, this union also serves as preparation for any future lawsuit that will be presented against them by other international manufacturers including Nokia and Microsoft. During Q3 of 2011, the shipment of smartphones has totaled 24 million in China. This led the Asian country to outperform the United States. As such, they have become the largest …
ZTE, a lesser known player in the smartphone market that is big in Asia, already let loose it’s quad (quintuple) core Tegra 3 tablet at a tradeshow in China but a few short moons ago. While ZTE is much better known for its low-end Android phones in Asia than anything else, they appear to be wanting to turn the tide. With this latest leak, it appears that the giant OEM is stepping up its game, and will be bringing not one – but two Quad Core Tegra 3 tablets to market in the coming months. Now, as the image will …
A new Android Honeycomb tablet computer is coming out just in time to make it to your Christmas shopping list. The LifeTab, as it’s currently called, is going to be part of Medion’s new line of mobile devices running on the Android platform. The company introduced the upcoming tablet in the recently concluded 51st IFA (Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin or less officially the “Berlin Radio Show”). This is no small debut as the IFA is considered to be one of the major international trade shows for consumer electronics. According to Medion’s representatives, their new tablet computer’s first release will be in the …
Tablets are a relatively new entry to the Android ecosystem but even so, they’ve quickly become a popular gadget to have. Being always-on and always connected has made it the go-to gadget for checking email, catching up on social sites and browsing the web. On top of all that, some versions can even make and receive calls, turning them into an ideal all-in-one device. Some of the models to currently out (as of this writing) are the HTC Flyer, the newer Samsung Galaxy Tab models and the Motorola Xoom. Meanwhile, device makers noticed that bigger screened phones measuring 4.0 inches …
Everybody loves shiny new gadgets, especially shiny new Android phones, but the price tag often makes us (and our wallets) cringe. The good news is that nowadays, buying one doesn’t mean you have to scrimp and eat instant ramen for the rest of the year. There are a lot of phones out right now, running Android Froyo 2.2 no less, that are very affordable and right on the mark. If you’ve been looking for a capable Android phone that doesn’t bite your budget, here are five of the best ones you can choose from: Huawei IDEOS U8150 Display: 2.8-inch TFT, …
One of the hottest icebreakers at the 2011 Mobile World Congress is whether or not we’ve entered the Gingerbread Age. Following on the footheels of the Optimus 2X and the Galaxy S II, ZTE unveiled its skateboard-inspired , Android 2.3-running “Skate.” The Skate packs a 4.3-inch screen, 5-megapixel NSDPA camera, Bluetooth, A-GPS, Wi-Fi, and a G-sensor into 4.2 ounce shell. Its only noteworthy tradeoff is its 800MHz CPU. This is a step behind higher-end models, but its Adreno 200 graphics processing unit and distinct silhouette—with an expected price point below $200 for North American customers—make it a quite attractive option for Android newcomers.
The 7-inch ZTE Light Android tablet isn’t anything to shout about, but it does a good job at the obvious stuff. It runs Android 2.1 and packs Wi-Fi and 3G radio. Of course, there is a GPS unit along with an SD card slot for increasing your memory. What is nice to hear is that this device is alleged to offer 10 hours of battery life. We have no clue from the press release as to what the price point will be on this device. We’re not there either so we can’t give you the first hand account, but apparently …
