Android 5.0 Lollipop set to roll out to Sony Xperia Z3 next month

sony xperia z3 review (4 of 26)

We already new that Sony would be bringing Android 5.0 Lollipop to the “core” Xperia Z2 and Z3 lines in early 2015, with the first whispers of this timeframe surfacing in October with Sony finally confirming the news in December. Up until now, the Japanese smartphone maker hasn’t been too specific on exactly when the Lollipop rollout will happen. Sony still hasn’t given us an exact date, but they have revealed the update will begin rolling out to the Xperia Z3 next month.

It’s unclear how much longer it will take for the update to reach other members of the Z3 and Z2 family, though it’s still nice to hear that Sony is committed to bringing Lollipop sooner rather than later. We’ll be sure to update you as soon as we learn more specifics of their plans.

How do you feel about how Sony has handled its plans for Lollipop so far — about as expected, moving faster than you expected or somewhere in between? Let us know in the comments.

And then Z1? In Feb or Mar?

    • Caelum Cunnane

I hope so, but I reckon probably May or so.

      • bao trung giang

May? i don’t think so because z1 is 2013’s flagship after all

        • Caelum Cunnane

I know, but when Kit Kat came out, it was a couple of weeks/months after the Z2 until I got received it OTA. But that may be because I’m in Ireland and have to wait a bit longer.

          • bao trung giang

Sony really need to be faster

          • Phil

Why rush it if all the bugs aren’t ironed out. I have a Z3 and Kit Kat runs flawless. I don’t want a new OS that has bugs.

  • Tony

I believe that they have taken a bit too long to get it ready for the Z family of premium phones. Sony must be better than others in the future.

    • makkyun

I think the reason for the delay is because they’re updating all Z phones and tablets and they’re planning to release all updates in a similar timeframe. And the old phones too, getting new drivers for old hardware can be a pain.

  • Jeff Martinez

    Z1 Compact here!

  • Darcy Myers

It’s coming to the whole z lineup. I know the z1s is getting it. Tmobile confirmed it.

  • David Onter

Don’t have Lollipop on my M8 yet too. They really need to be faster. Samsung, LG, (Motorola) were also able to do it :/

Lol in Australia my carrier hasen’t rolled out 4.4.4 for the Z3 yet (still in testing). My carrier has released 4.4.4 for Z2 and Z1 a month or two back.

With all the issues Lollipop has had (cf. Nexus 7 2012, Nexus 4/5), I wouldn’t want it on any phone until the memory leak issue is resolved, which we’re still waiting for Google to release a fix for (5.03?). I wouldn’t trust it until then, so it depends which version is supplied.

  • Who’s sooner with Lollipop, Samsung, HTC or Sony?
I have a Z1 Compact but I doubt I’ll update it to Lollipop and rather just wait for Lollipop on the Z4 Compact, for the complete new feel.
So no complains from my side regarding how quick Sony is rolling out Lollipop.

    • Bojan Tomic

I believe LG is the fastest. Lollipop started rolling out to G3 in Poland back at the beginning of December.
And then Samsung, ’cause they have their pre-release version out there already.

but then again, LG’s custom skin looks worthless. So I hope sony will take it’s time doing a aesthetically better job.

Just moved from the nexus 4 to the z3. Had lollipop for about a month.. It’s good but some of the apps kept crashing so hopefully all the bugs will have been ironed out by the time it comes to the z3. As I’ve learned with Google, being first to get the new Android operating system isn’t always a good thing.

    • Carney3

You made the exact move I’m considering. And I also suffered through serious bugs with Lollipop on my Nexus 4 until I did a factory reset.

  • mi

I dont care how long it takes to get

  • Andy

Just ordered a Z3 yesterday (coming from a Z1 Compact); this is really good news :)

  • Machiel

It’s really taking a long time. 5.0 has been out for weeks now and they could have prepared things using the beta releases. Technically it’s possible to launch it within days of the official release. Just goes to show Sony is not a software company.

    • mi

You are saying that like sony is the only one that has not released the lollipop update..

  • Rehan Thakkar

Sony is a bit slow on releasing the

  • Raefer Wilson

    I agree with mi totally

  • modmans2ndcoming

    Stock dialer and contacts PLEASE!!!!!

    • Kagnon

Stock dialer doesn’t even have T9 search functionality

      • Daniel

        Yes it does…

        • Kagnon

My bad seems like they added it.

But i still preferred OEMs implementation of having contacts and dialer as the same app rather than 2 different apps.

The dialer for lollipop isn’t great, tap and hold to bring up quick options no longer work.
Dialer doesn’t search in recent if it isn’t in your contacts.
It just isn’t very user friendly, not many would know that you need to tap on the head/face to access the text message option cause tapping on the number just gives Call back and details options.

  • adolflow

    we already ‘knew’

  • Pedro

Why isn’t it rolling out Lollipop for the M2? It’s unfair!

  • danny wood

I’m willing to wait longer if it means the bugs have been fixed. I have a N9 and overall 5.02 is pretty good, BUT I’m worried about 5.0 killing my Z3 performance because if encryption, and also my amazing battery life! Once it’s available, I might just sit on the update for a few weeks and follow the boards to hear what the update has or hasn’t affected on the Z3.Right now Z3 on 4.4.4 is super nice!

  • Chewbacka Grizelda

Dumb question from an Android newb here… What are the system requirements for Android 5.0, and is it possible to get an upgrade from Android 4.4 on an existing device?

  • brendanhohoho

The Xperia Z3 is a more than decent smartphone, and one I’d happily carry around from day to day. It’s nicely designed, has great battery life and a lovely display.
