Activision is expanding their successful Skylanders franchise with a new mobile card game, akin to titles like Hearthstone. Skylanders Battlecast is a free-to-play game available today for Android, iOS, and Kindle Fire.

The game takes much of its inspiration from games like Hearthstone, but sprinkles in a mixture of RPG elements. You control three characters in a turn-based battle and rotate them during the fight as you feel necessary. Certain types of creatures work well against others, some spells mix better with others, and vice versa. Your objective is take out each of your enemy’s creatures. You can play in two different modes: a single-player campaign, where you only play against AI, or a PvP mode, where you play against other Battlecasters.

While Battlecast is free-to-play, it has microtransaction support to allow you to purchase more cards to expand your deck. There are two different packs you can choose from: Battlecast booster packs, which contain eight cards ($4.99), and Battlecast Battle Packs, which contain 22 cards ($14.99). While that doesn’t seem like too much at face value, keep in mind that there are 300 different cards to collect in total, as well as 24 different characters. If paying actual money isn’t your thing though, you can earn virtual currency in-game by winning battles.

In addition to getting packs virtually, you can also purchase physical cards in-store  and scan them with your smart device’s camera to import them into the game. It is actually cheaper to purchase cards at retail than it is through the game itself, as the Battle Packs come down to only $9.99.

Skylanders Battlecast can be downloaded now from the Google Play Store. What do you think, worth checking out?
