Gallons of digital ink have been spilled over the pros and cons of Quad HD (2560 x 1440) resolution, compared to “only” Full HD. We won’t start that argument here again. One thing’s clear – there is no “good enough” where the mobile industry is going.

Just ask HTC, which @upleaks claims will jump to Quad HD for the Butterfly 3, the unannounced new generation of HTC’s Asia-centric plastic-clad flagship. The Butterfly 3 will come with a 5.2-inch Quad HD screen, according to the leakster, for a retina-pleasing 564 ppi.

That’s all that we “know” about the Butterfly 3 so far, though we could venture a guess and say the device will hit China, Taiwan, and Japan around the middle of the year.

What about the One M9? All the leaks and rumors point to HTCsticking with Full HD for its new flagship. The device, due March 1, will come with a 5-inch Full HD IPS LCD display. In case you need some “evidence,” these wallpapers (optimized for Full HD) that were allegedly extracted from the M9 will have to do for now.

The comparatively lower resolution of the M9 could help it edge out some competitors in battery life, though the M9’s biggest rival has a secret weapon: Samsung’s Galaxy S6 will feature a battery-sapping Quad HD screen, but its 14nm Exynos processor may even the balance thanks to its lower power consumption. But that’s just speculation for now; a feast is coming for smartphone lovers in just a couple of weeks, and we’ll be there to serve you all the juicy details.
