Got root? Improve your HTC One (M8) camera with this mod

We had mixed feelings about the HTC One (M8)’s Ultrapixel camera, which produced decent shots in certain conditions, but overall seemed to lack the dynamic range and detail of other high end cameras. In a bid to squeeze the maximum potential out of HTC’s flagship camera technology, XDA developer Jishnu Sur has created a mod which aims to improve the camera’s performance. The catch is that you’ll need root access to your phone.

Obviously the modifications are all taking place on the software side of things, so there’s only so much that can be done. Nevertheless, the mod makes a substantial number of tweaks to file bitrates in an effort to store higher quality files, alterations to color reproduction, as well as changes to the camera’s shutter speeds for help with different lighting conditions.

The images below show a difference between the HTC One (M8)’s stock auto mode and Jishnu’s modified auto, top and bottom respectively (click for full size). You can also find a collection of images taken with the mod by XDA member G-Bus right here.

Quite a few changes have been made to the camera’s functionality, so here’s a quick list for easy reading.

  • Made the Video Bitrates to CBR [Constant Bitrate] 35Mbps.
  • Added action scene.
  • Added flash and self-timer in burst scene mode.
  • Support for flash in EIS Scene mode.
  • Added flash for night mode.
  • Removed the fixed resolution limit for panorama shots.
  • Flash support added for panorama shots.
  • Self-timer support added for Panorama shots.
  • Support speed increase to 1/9000 and set the minimum shutter speed to 1/100.
  • Modified media profiles for better Audio Quality.
  • JPEG quality bumped to 95
  • Removed the hardcoded bitrate limited by HTC.
  • Sound bitrates improved from 156kbps to 192kbps for clearer and louder sound while recording.
  • Better color reproduction in all Manual, Auto and HDR modes.

To install the modification you will need root permissions and a custom recovery option to flash the zip file with, which you can download from here. As usual, it is recommended to make backups before flashing new files, just in case.

If you try it out, please let us know what you think.

You know you did something wrong with the camera when someone else tries to fix it themselves.

    Yay to progress

Same thing has been done to the LG G2 and other devices. Has nothing to do with being 4MP cam. There was actually a bit of drama between jishnu sur and xdabbeb (another camera app mod dev for the G2) a couple months back. I’ve been hesitant to try this mod since the dev has been accused of stealing code. He used to be a Recognized Contributor but he got that title stripped away after xdabbeb proved he borrowed stuff from his app mod without permission. Also, his account is currently suspended so that isn’t too good.

Ah, my bad. Didn’t know that camera mods were being developed all the time

Look, nobody that bought the M8 cares how good or bad the camera is. They don’t care about the M8’s other shortcomings. It’s all about the metal body and the premium feel of the phone.

yeah, best in class performance, pretty UI, and a nice design means absolutely nothing.

    Good.
But you must know that “M8 owners”, that worship M8 on the tech sites , are MOSTLY iboys fighting Samsung , that haven’t even seen M8, and don’t buy anything without apple’s logo on it.
So, to whom is this article addressed ?

    • Jerry Rich

Never thought of it like that, but I think you’re right. I think that some of the iboys are actually buying the M8 though. They are able to fantasize that they’re holding a real iphone when they close their eyes and fondle that gleaming metal body of the M8.

This article appears to be directed at HTC One M8 owners who have root access and wish for their camera to be better. There are people who buy things because they like them and not because they want to lash out at other companies.

      • The-Sailor-Man

Agree that out there are few ppl who actually buy M8. But on the tech sites the “M8 owners” mostly iboys pretending to have it. Fighting Samsung, and to prove that the sealed cheap aluminium is “greatest feature ever”. Because Apple don’t give them any real tech features.

I’m sorry bud but I just can’t agree with far reaching generalizations like that. Something I’ve learned being a blogger is that there are a whole mess of people who view articles/videos, enjoy them, and simply move on without commenting. People who comment are generally those who either agree very strongly with a sentiment expressed in in the content or someone who very strongly disagrees with it. Those in the middle who either agree, disagree, or are neutral generally don’t care enough to comment :)

I would agree that many (not all, but some) people who comment may be those trying to start fights but the reader base in general is much larger and much more diverse than any given comment section would make them seem :)

If they could only do this for the Moto X
