TL;DR
  • The POCO M2 is now official in India, essentially being a rebranded Redmi 9.
  • The phone features a 6.53-inch screen, a 5,000mAh battery, and a quad-rear camera array.
  • The device goes on sale on September 15 on Flipkart.

Hot on the heels of the POCO X3 launch, the Xiaomi sub-brand has now announced its latest affordable offering in the form of the POCO M2. And it looks like a rebadged Xiaomi Redmi 9.

The budget smartphone probably won’t make the cover of any style magazines, but it isn’t POCO’s most unattractive device. It features a waterdrop notch up front, with a vertical center-mounted camera array at the rear.

Up front, the POCO M2 fits a 6.53-inch display with a 2,340 x 1,080 resolution. Those pixels are pushed around by a MediaTek Helio G80 chipset mated to 6GB of RAM and a choice of 64GB or 128GB of internal storage. There’s also a microSD card slot for data hoarders and dual 4G SIM support for plan jugglers.

For photography, the POCO M2 employs four cameras at the rear, namely a 13MP main camera with f/2.2 aperture, an 8MP wide-angle camera, a 5MP macro camera, and a 2MP depth sensor. There’s also an 8MP selfie camera mounted in the aforementioned notch.

Finally, some creature comforts of old also make the cut including a headphone jack and a capacitive fingerprint sensor at the rear. Modern amenities listed include Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5 support, 18W charging, and a 5,000mAh battery. All in all, pretty much identical to the earlier Xiaomi release.

The POCO M2 will go on sale on Flipkart from September 15 at 12 PM IST (2:30 AM ET). The 64GB storage option starts at Rs. 10,999 (~$149), while the 128GB is arguably the better option available for Rs. 12,499 (~$170).

POCO is offering two candy-coated colorways namely Brick Red and Slate Blue, but a more serious Pitch Black sheen is also on offer.
