Back in May we reported that Xiaomi was hard at work on a 4.7-inch dual-core handset called the “Red Rice” for release in October, at a very impressive price point of just $130. As it turns out, we were right on track about a few things, but the release date wasn’t one of them.
The Xiaomi Hongmi (Red Rice in Chinese) has now touched down with a price point of CNY799 – roughly $130. It turns out the handset actually runs a 1.5GHz quad-core Mediatek Cortex-A7 processor. The phone’s size is in fact 4.7-inches, and it’s resolution has been confirmed as 1280 x 720.
Coupled with a rather beautiful (if not a little Nokia-esque) design, the Xiaomi Hongmi certainly will be worth every penny of its paltry asking price.
The Hongmi also features a PowerVR SGX544 GPU, 1GB RAM, 8MP rear cam, 1.3MP front cam, a 2000 mAh battery and dual-SIM support. Unfortunately the storage isn’t exactly great at just 4GB, but at least it does feature microSD for expansion. As for the OS, the device runs on version 5 of the Android-based MIUI firmware.
While these specs aren’t exactly bleeding-edge, for the price they are extremely impressive. Coupled with a rather beautiful (if not a little Nokia-esque) design, the Xiaomi Hongmi certainly will be worth every penny of its paltry asking price.
Unfortunately, the Red Rice phone will likely never make its way out of China, even if Xiaomi has expressed interest in eventually making its way to more markets outside of its home country. For those in China, the handset will launch exclusively on Qzone, though it will eventually be up for purchase directly from China Mobile as well.
