WhatsApp said to be working on dark mode for WhatsApp Web, desktop

It took a while for WhatsApp to bring dark mode to the mobile app, so we're expecting a similar timeline here.

It took the WhatsApp team ages to bring dark mode to the messaging app, finally launching the eye-friendly UI option earlier this year. But WhatsApp Web and the desktop version are still restricted to the eye-searing light mode.

Fortunately, frequent tipster WABetaInfo has revealed that the team is working to bring dark mode to WhatsApp Web and the desktop app. Check out a screenshot of the desktop app below.

WhatsApp Web and desktop are getting a dark mode.

Much like the mobile dark mode, it’s clear that this isn’t quite an OLED-friendly dark mode. In any event, it’s still dark enough that it shouldn’t blind you in the middle of the night.

The WhatsApp Web and desktop dark mode is definitely a work-in-progress though, as evident by the white backgrounds on emojis seen below.

Dark mode isn’t publicly available in WhatApp Web or the desktop app, and if the timeline is anything like the mobile app, then you shouldn’t expect a launch anytime soon either. We first got word of a dark mode in WhatsApp back in 2018, and it only launched earlier this year.

Nevertheless, we’re glad to see the company working on this feature for the desktop and web versions as well. Now, about an OLED dark mode for the mobile app.
