You probably know that the 2012 summer Olympic Games will take place in London, from July 27 to August 12. It’s one of the reasons why Samsung (an Olympic sponsor) chose the metropolis to introduce the Galaxy S3 superphone last week.
We knew for a while now that Visa, another major sponsor of the Games, and Samsung will team up to enable mobile contactless payments throughout the Olympic venues, for both athletes and tourists. Now, the two companies have finally made their partnership official, by announcing that the NFC-enabled Samsung Galaxy S3 will be the official phone of the 2012 Olympics.
Since the Galaxy S3 will be the phone of choice for the athletes competing for gold and glory this summer, it’s only apt for Visa and Samsung to release an Olympic edition of the Galaxy S3. Aside from the Olympic-themed exterior, the phone will come with a special version of the payWave Android app that will allow athletes to make contactless payments at select retailers in the city and throughout the Olympic venues. Over 140,000 contactless terminals have been deployed across the country, in preparation for the summer, showing that Visa and Samsung are willing to invest considerably in promoting NFC-based payments this year.
To make a contactless payment, customers who sport the Samsung Galaxy S3 will just have to hold the phone in front of the reader. Security being is one of the major concerns about mobile payments, so any purchase above £15 will require entering a passcode. Galaxy S3 users will also get to view their recent transactions history, along with the real-time balance of their accounts.
If you don’t want to miss out pre-ordering the Samsung Galaxy S3 in the UK, we’ve got that one covered in our recent post here, which lists the UK-based online retailers that offer the phone in the £500 price range. And because we can’t get enough of the specs of the Samsung Galaxy S3, here they are once again. The Galaxy S3 sports a 1.4GHz Eynos 4 Quad processor, 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED screen, 1GB of RAM, a choice of 16GB/32GB/64GB internal storage, 8MP rear camera, eye-tracking feature and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
Will you be going to the Olympics this summer, as a spectator or (why not) an athlete? And are you excited about getting your hands on the Olympic-themed Samsung Galaxy S3?
