Popular online video sharing site Vimeo has announced today a new Universal Player for web sites that allows mobile devices, such as Google Android devices and Apple’s iPad and iPhone, to play back Vimeo videos directly from a web browser by making use of Flash or HTML5, as appropriate.

The Universal Player, an embeddable web page video player, will offers Flash support for Android mobile devices as well as HTML5 for iOS devices like Apple’s iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. The Player intelligently configures the video format for the device’s web browser and streams the appropriate video resolution, such as HD, SD, or mobile. The company also announced a new feature for its mobile users called Watch Later, which lets users save a video in their queue for future playback.
