TL;DR
  • Bandai has launched the Tamagotchi Smart wearable.
  • The wearable offers a touchscreen and step tracking too.
  • This is the latest model in the line of digital pets that were popular in the 1990s.

The Tamagotchi digital pet was one of the biggest crazes of the 1990s, as the little device allowed you to feed the creature and clean up after it throughout your day. In fact, I vaguely remember my school banning them at one point.

Nevertheless, the concept is making a comeback as Kotaku reports (h/t: PhoneArena) that Bandai is launching the Tamagotchi Smart wearable as part of the toy line’s 25th anniversary. The Tamagotchi Smart uses a watch form factor and offers a touchscreen, step tracking, and clock support.

As for the Tamagotchi aspect itself, you can feed it, bathe it, dress it up in different clothes, and play mini-games. But Bandai also promises the ability to interact with a nearby friend’s creature, find other Tamagotchi creatures via the smartphone app, and call out to your own pet with your voice (although it doesn’t recognize words).

The company is also selling add-on cards that offer content like more mini-games, additional items, and different watch designs.

The Tamagotchi Smart will be available in Japan from November 23 for 6,380 yen (~$58), but we’ve asked Bandai about a wider release and will update the article accordingly.
