The dust has settled – for now – on the flashy debut of the $299 “2014 flagship killer” OnePlus One. The device came almost out of nowhere (OnePlus is literally a months-old startup) to capture the imagination of users and critics alike. Sure, costing half the price of comparable devices is one big reason for the excitement. Unconventional marketing is another. But the presence of CyanogenMod 11S, a new version of the popular custom ROM, is what really made the OnePlus One an attractive proposition from many users.

At the end of a long launch day in Beijing, the creator and leader of CyanogenMod, Steve Kondik, kindly sat for an interview with our Josh Vergara. In the video at the top, Mr. Cyanogen touches on some of the key new features present on CM11S, including the brand new and powerful Theme engine, new Camera app, and integrated Gallery.

Steve also talked about his favorite things about the OnePlus (hint – audio), as well as his team’s small contributions to the phone’s hardware design.

Alas, all we can do is wait. The OnePlus One and CM11S are still a month away from actual release, with the device set to begin shipping in 16 markets including the US, Canada, and countries in Western Europe in “late May”.
