Seemingly ages ago, Enix released Valkyrie Profile for the original, first generation Sony Playstation. In 2006, during the Playstation 2’s era, Square Enix released a sequel called Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria. Finally in 2009, it put out a Nintendo DS installment called Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume. Almost seven years have passed, but now it seems a fourth installment is in the works and will be arriving this summer.

Valkyrie Anatomia: The Origin was initially mentioned simply in name, leaving fans guessing as to the platform. On Thursdsy however, Square Enix released a teaser movie and confirmation the product is, in fact, a mobile game. Pre-registration is open until April 26th to those who have a Square Enix Bridge account, with the game set to debut on Android and iOS this Summer.

Those interested should note the game’s teaser site stubbornly refuses to open on a Windows PC browser or Android tablet, instead stating “Please access this site from a smartphone.” Also be aware that the product has only been announced for the Japanese market, thus all related content and registration is in said language.

What is Valkyrie Profile?

Valkyrie Profile has been one of gaming’s more mature-themed, challenging franchises based on Norse mythology. The games typically center around a woman who must solve problems among mortals and in the process, harvest their souls for war in Valhalla. As can be expected, death and treachery is littered throughout the plot as the heroine seeks to deal with human’s plight.

What is Valkyrie Anatomia?

The exact nature of this game is truly a mystery at the moment. In the past year Square Enix has released a number of Final Fantasy mobile games that make use of high resolution sprites or polygons. These games, while very modern in terms of their appearance, have been criticized by some long-term series fans for their adherence to mobile “practices” including liberal use of a Stamina system and subsequent In App Purchases, random item discovery (also linked with IAP) and a “detached” mission-based presentation that is at odds with the nature of console JRPGs.

Valkyrie Anatomia will likely use a combination of these elements, however there is a chance it could make use of a pseudo 2-D perspective, much like the original installment did. In terms of story, the subtitle “The Origin” seeks to imply it takes place prior to the first installment. Details will become more clear once Square Enix releases them, likely next month at E3.
