The Sony Xperia XA2, XA2 Ultra, and L2 leak with a familiar design

Sony's mid-range lineup is getting refreshed, but it will unfortunately look familiar to many fans. Sony is keeping the same design language for the Xperia XA2, XA2 Ultra, and L2 in 2018.

TL;DR
  • The Sony Xperia XA2, XA2 Ultra, and L2 appear to follow Sony’s current design language.
  • One major change is the fingerprint sensor being placed on the rear of the device.
  • The Xperia XA2 is expected to have a 5-inch display, while the XA2 Ultra has a 6-inch display.

As Sony prepares a refresh to its budget lineup, leaks are coming fast and furious. The Sony Xperia XA2, XA2 Ultra, and L2 have been shown off in leaked pictures, CAD renderings, and caught as they’ve passed through regulatory bodies. Now, we’re getting a better look at the devices thanks to leaker @evleaks.

Unfortunately, it looks like Sony is sticking with the same OmniBalance design language for the trio of phones. A Sony representative recently confirmed that its next generation of phones would feature an all-new design. From the pictures below, it’s painfully obvious that Sony considers the XA2, XA2 Ultra, and L2 previous generation devices.

We can see that Sony is sticking with large bezels on the top and bottom of the devices to house things like sensors, the front-facing camera, and its logo. Luckily, the side bezels appear much smaller. Between those bezels are an alleged 5-inch 720p display for the XA2 and a 6-inch 1080p display for the XA2 Ultra. Both displays are expected to have a 16:9 aspect ratio, rather than the newer 18:9 most new phones are using.

Around back, we find a single camera sensor, flash, and a fingerprint sensor. The placement of the fingerprint sensor is of note here because Sony has historically placed it in the power button the side of the phone. As U.S.-based owners will know, the company disables the scanner in the states, but hopefully, that’s no longer the case in 2018.

We don’t have solid information on specs yet, but we shouldn’t have to wait too long. Both CES 2018 and Mobile World Congress take place in the next two months. We expect Sony to unveil the devices at one of those shows.
