Update (1/2/18): Earlier today we brought you some leaked pics of the Xperia XA2 Ultra, and now we’re getting a peek at some leaked CAD renderings of the device.

The XA2 will actually come in two flavors, the previously leaked Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra (H4233), and the Xperia XA2 (H4133). The Xperia XA2 will supposedly rock a 5-inch display and will measure 141.6 x 70.4 x 9.6 mm. The Xperia XA2 Ultra comes with a larger 6-inch display and will measure in at 162.5 x 80 x 9.5 mm. Below are a series of CAD renders from OnLeaks and TigerMobiles.

Original article (1/2/18) 06:31: Mobile World Congress 2018 is fast approaching and that means we’ve almost due another batch of phones from Sony. The Xperia-maker hasn’t set the world on fire for some time now, but this year could mark a turning point, with rumors abound that the Japanese OEM will ditch its tired design language for something a little different.

While that may still be the case, it seems like one member of Sony’s 2018 family didn’t get the memo. A pair of leaked images have obtained by XperiaBlog allegedly show the upcoming “H4233” model – a device we now know will carry the Xperia XA2 Ultra moniker.

Let’s start with the most obvious sticking point, those big chunky bezels. Considering the XA1 Ultra sported an equally large “forehead” and “chin”, it’s not a complete surprise to see them return on the phablet’s successor.

Looking ahead: what we'd like to see in the smartphone world in 2018
Features

Unfortunately for Sony, whether necessary or not, the industry has almost entirely moved on from 16:9 displays. While not entirely “bezel-less”, devices like the HONOR 7X have proved that elongated screens aren’t reserved just for flagships. Some consumers might find it difficult to not see the still-to-be-revealed mid-range Xperia XA2 Ultra’s supposed 6-inch Full HD display and think it looks a little out of date already.

There are some positive takeaways, however. First off, the leaked images show a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. This should (hopefully) put to bed any behind-the-scenes issues bringing the functionality to the US and ensure that a modern Sony phone’s fingerprint sensor is fully enabled wherever you purchase the device.

The front-facing shot also shows off a dual-camera unit which should delight selfie fans. There’s no word on the megapixel count or any unique features, but Sony will no doubt push the selfie snappers as a key selling point for younger buyers.

One area where Sony has impressed in recent months is update timeliness, especially when it comes to Google’s latest flagship OS upgrade, Android Oreo. The Xperia XA2 Ultra appears to be following this trend by running 8.0 Oreo out of the box. This should be a given by now, but it’s great to see that Sony isn’t slipping behind and contributing to Android OS fragmentation with its latest releases.

Spec-wise, we don’t have a lot to go on just yet, but the Xperia XA2 Ultra is expected to pack Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 630 SoC backed by 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage (likely expandable, given Sony’s track record).

What do you think of the Xperia XA2 Ultra? Are those big bezels a dealbreaker? Let us know in the comments.
