Samsung's first under-display camera might not feature on a phone

Think bigger screens with invisible cameras.

TL;DR
  • Samsung Display has published a video showing under-display camera tech on an OLED laptop screen.
  • The technology could first appear on a Samsung “Blade Bezel” laptop.
  • It’s unclear if and when other laptop makers will adopt the tech.

Under-display cameras have not really broken into the smartphone world in a big way yet, but they’re certainly something we expect to see more of in 2021. Samsung, for instance, is rumored to include an under-display camera on the Galaxy Z Fold 3, but we might see the company’s tech debut on laptops before that happens.

Samsung Display has published a video on Weibo giving us our first look at its under-display camera technology that’ll appear on OLED laptops. The video teases the thin-and-light nature of the display and gives us a glimpse at what Samsung Display is calling a “transparent camera hole” (machine translated).

The panel teased in the video is just 1mm thick and weighs 130g. It could first feature on a so-called Blade Bezel laptop, but it’s unclear from the video if that’s the name of a device or just the display.

There’s no word on the specs of the under-display camera or any details on when/if other laptop manufacturers will adopt this OLED panel. However, Samsung Display did tease new laptop OLED screens at the beginning of the month.

CES 2021 could have been a perfect stage to debut these panels, but so far none of the laptops launched at the event feature an under-display camera. It looks like we might have to wait a bit more to see Samsung’s new tech in action. In saying so, we found that the ZTE Axon 20 5G‘s under-display selfie camera delivered lower quality images than a traditional selfie camera. So hopefully Samsung’s solution offers better results.
