TL;DR
  • Samsung teases “#TheNextExynos” reveal for January 4th
  • All signs point to the recently-announced, likely Galaxy S9/S9 Plus SoC – the Exynos 9810
  • The reveal will come just a few days prior to the start of CES 2018

Samsung will fully unveil its next-generation Exynos chipset on January 4th, 2018, judging by a post from the official Samsung Exynos Twitter account. The tweet includes the hashtag “#TheNextExynos” (good luck saying that correctly ten times fast!), which suggests the South Korean giant is talking about its latest 9-series chip, the Exynos 9810.

Should the date mark the grand debut of Samsung’s latest 10nm processor, which is expected to power the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus in selected regions, it notably comes just a few days prior to CES 2018.

The date’s proximity to the massive Las Vegas showcase is fitting considering the first official confirmation of the Exynos 9810’s existence emerged after Samsung acknowledged a related CES 2018 Innovation Award back in November. WHOOPs.

There’s very little new information we can glean from the tweet aside from Samsung’s promise that the 10nm processor will go “beyond a component”.

Thankfully, we already know a few vague details that suggest the new chipset will offer a number of significant upgrades over its predecessor, the Exynos 8895, which powered the Galaxy S8, S8 Plus, and Note 8.

For example, we know that the Exynos 9810 will pack an upgraded GPU and a Category 18 LTE modem which promises peak download speeds up to 1.2 Gbps. There’s also some speculation that the 9810 will feature a dedicated neural networking or AI processor to rival applications from Qualcomm and Huawei, but this has yet to be confirmed.

As for the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus, the newly FCC-certified flagships are almost certain to carry Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 SoC in the US and China, while the model released in Europe and other markets will be powered by the Exynos 9810.
