Samsung files for Gear VR trademark, is this the company's virtual reality headset?

Over the past few weeks we have been hearing the odd rumor that Samsung is preparing to jump into the emerging market for virtual reality. It turns out that such a device might actually be heading our way, with the moniker Gear VR.
Samsung has recently filed an application with the US Patent and Trademark Office to trademark Gear VR. The name is a little on the nose, but at least we know what we’re dealing with. Unfortunately, the trademark application leaves us none the wiser about what Samsung’s virtual reality product will actually look like. From what we have pieced together so far, Samsung’s headset will be making use of the company’s range of Android devices to power it.
At the end of May we also heard reports suggesting that Samsung was now working with Oculus to develop its own virtual reality headset. Given Samsung’s industry leading AMOLED display technology, and the low latency, high resolution requirements of virtual reality, a little technology trading between the two seems like a beneficial arrangement. With Oculus providing the software side of things.

Are you keen on virtual reality, or is Samsung’s effort likely to end up as a forgettable gimmick?
