Samsung's new Galaxy Z Flip may launch later than expected

Samsung won’t launch the Galaxy Z Flip 2 until well after the Galaxy S21 series makes its debut, according to a new report from Korea.

Per The Elec, the Korean smartphone maker will not reveal or launch its smaller flip phone alongside its new flagship line at its upcoming Unpacked event. This would be a deviation from its 2020 strategy, which saw the Galaxy Z Flip launch alongside the Galaxy S20 series but go on sale ahead of the flagships. The reason behind the revised game plan is down to sales overlap — the firm seemingly doesn’t want the devices to steal potential customers away from each other.

As a result, the Galaxy Z Flip 2 is expected to launch after Q1 2021. Based on earlier rumors, it would be around three months after the Galaxy S21’s expected reveal date in early January. Despite the delay, 2021 is shaping up to be a big year for Samsung’s foldable offerings. As many as five devices are expected to debut. Samsung’s renewed focus on foldables seems increasingly likely too, as rumors that the firm will ax its Note line from next year continue to gain traction.

The report doesn’t shed much light on the Galaxy S21 series but does reiterate previous reports of three model offerings. The vanilla S21 will be joined by a Plus and Ultra model, as has become a tradition. Manufacturing of the trio is set to begin next month, with six million models expected to be available by the end of January 2021.

Samsung’s Unpacked event may be just around the corner, so expect an uptick of Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy S21 leaks in the coming weeks.
