TL;DR
  • The Samsung Galaxy S22 could feature a much smaller battery than its predecessor.
  • Its battery capacity might be lower than most existing Android flagships.

All Samsung Galaxy S series flagships since the past two years have packed at least a 4,000mAh battery. Before that, the Galaxy S10 series started at a mere 3,400mAh capacity. With smartphone OEMs aiming to deliver more battery life on their flagships, looks like Samsung is going in reverse gear.

According to information received by folks over at GalaxyClub, the vanilla Samsung Galaxy S22 model might end up with a rated battery capacity of just 3,590mAh. That means its typical, advertised battery size should be around 3,700mAh. In comparison, the basic Galaxy S21 model carries a rated battery capacity of 3,880mAh and an advertised capacity of 4,000mAh.

The publication cites the model number of the battery — EB-BS901ABY — as its source for this information. The serial number corresponds to the model number — SM-S901 — that apparently belongs to the Galaxy S22.

Meanwhile, the S22 might not be the only model getting a battery downgrade next year. According to previous rumors, the Galaxy S22 Plus might also see a smaller 4,600mAh battery as opposed to the 4,800mAh capacity of the Galaxy S21 Plus. The Galaxy S22 Ultra is estimated to have a 5,000mAh battery, the same as the current Ultra model. It’s worth noting that the Galaxy S22 was earlier thought to be packing a 3,800mAh battery.

That said, Samsung could offset the shrunken battery size on the Galaxy S22 by using more power-efficient components. For instance, it may be able to reduce display power consumption by using its trademarked Eco2OLED display that features on the Galaxy Z Fold 3. It promises energy savings of up to 25%. The new SoCs on the Galaxy S22 series could also make a significant difference in how much power the phones consume. However, this is all conjecture at the moment as we don’t know what Samsung or chipset maker Qualcomm have in store.

We hope Samsung makes up for the smaller battery on the Galaxy S22 with faster charging. The Galaxy S21 series tops out at 25W speeds. With more and more companies offering faster wired charging, all phones in the Samsung Galaxy S22 series should at least offer 45W speeds.
